The Moog Music Etherwave has rapidly become the definitive instrument for Theremin beginners, for good reason: it's solidly made and has excellent performance. Theremins are an inherently difficult insturment to begin with, and a poorly made instrument can easily make the difference between "incredibly difficult" and "completely impossible". Unlike most cheaper Theremins, the Etherwave is definitely playable, and professional musicians do use it both on stage and in the recording studio. It has a thick, solid wood shell, and two detachable chrome antennas which seem more solid in person than they do in a photo. The unit is relatively lightweight, and I'd guess it weighs about the same as my laptop.
As for its sound, it has a fairly classic theremin sound... some people complain it's a bit thin, but I've found that depends a lot more on the amplifier and (if applicable) equalizer used than on the instrument itself. When hooked up to professional gear, my Etherwave sounds rich and fat.
My Etherwave has appeared at several major science fiction conventions. I like that I can throw it in a small bag over my shoulder, pack a small amp in another bag, and use a standard microphone stand that's borrowable at most performance venues if I don't want to carry one. (I have a folding stand I can bring along, too.) Probably over a thousand people have toyed with my Etherwave, and most of them told me they had fun with it. The instrument's difficulty does not subtract from its fun value.
Don't forget that at a minimum you'll also need to get an amplifier (a keyboard amp: the Etherwave is a bit too powerful for a guitar amp although one can be used in a pinch), a stand (a microphone stand, as I said, without a boom arm), and an audio cable to connect the Theremin to the amp (a standard inexpensive "guitar cord" with 1/4 inch male connectors at both ends).

Got the pedal, and it is amazing. Five stars for the pedal, worth every dime. The time it took to ship it wasn't amazing, but I guess you get what you pay for. I purchased the pedal on December 24th, and received it on January 4th. It was boxed well, and is a sturdy pedal. Definitely the best pedal I have ever purchased. I have thus far ran it through a couple of different amplifiers, a Roland FP-3, a MIDI laptop setup, a 1975 Rhodes, and an electric violin and all of them were really fun to play with. I would definitely recommend the pedal but if you want it quickly, pay for the faster shipping.

The all-analog ring modulator rebuilds your sound into two separate tones and then uses an internal carrier oscillator to spread those tones apart in the frequency spectrum. The higher the carrier frequency, the more the new tones are separated. Wow, someone actually wrote as a review "My husband uses this in his band a lot...don't know anything about it...", now I have seen it all. Why would any body think that an endorsement like that could possibly be helpful in any way? Oh great, well if it's good enough for your husband then I'll take TWO!! Holy smokes, what else do you see him using that I might want? This is the classic Moog filter that changed the sound of electronic music. Reach out and sweep the filter with the CUTOFF knob. Or use the ENVELOPE section to do it automatically. I just bought this pedal and I must say, I will never again buy any other chorus/flange/phase shifter pedal again! I have a Boss BF-3 stereo flange and an Electro-Harmonix small cone full-chorus unit and neither of them even come close to the prestige of the Moog stage phaser. The tones and sounds that this pedal produces are like none that I have ever heard before. This pedal comes fully load with an extremely diverse collection of sounds that opens your ears to a whole new world of noises! An excellent choice.

The MF-103 produces two comb-filter responses. They are called 6-Stage and 12-Stage, because of the number of phase-shifting circuits that are used internally. The 6-Stage mode has three dips in its frequency response, while the 12-Stage mode has six dips. These two modes have distinctly different sound qualities. In addition, the MF-103 features a variable feedback circuit which increases the resonance, or 'depth' of the phaser sound. Features RATE rotary control, which varies LFO's frequency over a 250:1 range. AMOUNT rotary control, which adjusts the amount by which the LFO output varies the phaser sweep. SWEEP rotary control, which moves the phaser frequency response over a six-octave range. OUTPUT LEVEL rotary control, which balances the phaser signals with the bypassed signal. LFO, a LED that indicates the LFO rate. whether the phaser is active or bypassed. ON/BYPASS, a rugged, smooth-acting 'stomp switch'. Phasing is one of the best ways to impart motion to a track and to make sounds come alive. With the MF-103 Phaser you can get swirling, shimmering, vibrating effects; fill up a whole stage from one sound source; even create brand new sonic textures. A phaser is a type of comb filter, so called because its frequency response has several dips and peaks, like the teeth of a comb. As the phaser response sweeps back and forth across the frequency spectrum, the harmonics of the audio input signal are alternately increased and decreased.
