(More customer reviews)I have played bass for over 10 years for everything from church bands to death metal bands. I've performed and done studio work as a bass player. I used to preach nothing but 5 & 6 string basses (because of the extra range) but I started playing with a band who kind of followed the idea of Brain Drill (complex bass tapping lines mimicing the guitar) and I found the 6 stringer was just too big for my hands to quickly move the scales. I remembered seeing the band Skillet on stage with a Traben a few years ago and I was really impressed with the look and the sound. I did research on Traben and everything sounded great so I ordered this bass from Musicians Friend (when it was on sale for like $279.00)
First, know that this is a professional grade bass! If you're buying this for a beginner, you are getting something that they can play all the way to whatever status they are trying to reach. It is also great for tone shaping so a pro would love to have this on hand for all their needs.
The electronics are incredible. They sound great, have that huge punch but capable of being toned down for that dead sound. Response to both fingers and picks is very smooth. They are active but battery life seems to be normal to better than most. Tone, volume, and then your preamp. Perfect for doing minor adjustments. Usually I replace my pickups in every guitar but I don't want to ruin this sound by changing these. The only other guitar I've never changed pickups in is my D6 bass.
The bridge is actually the tribal design so it is very strudy, which I like. I was surprised to find the body was made of bass wood and the neck of maple. The cheaper quality wood does not seem to affect the tone. I have basses made from much higher quality materials that don't come close to this one. There is a lot of contact between the neck and body which amplifies the tone and makes it unique. The guitar is very stripped down and streamlined so that it is not heavy, but has enough mass to make a BIG tone. Color options are a little limited, I'm not one for the satin black look, but it is still a beautiful instrument.
I use this bass mainly for laying bass tracks in the studio now. It is great recording direct. The lightweight/big tone attribute makes it a perfect performance bass as well. If you're in the market for something that will continue to serve you and make your friends jealous I highly recommend this bass. I'm still amazed everytime I pick mine up and play it.

Sledgehammer 4 String Bass (Ash) Review

The prior owner had converted it to a fretless by removing the frets (a risky move, but what the heck, it didn't destroy the neck, so,...). I love this instrument. With or without the frets, I can say that the neck feels great, and you can't beat that big fat music man-style humbucker for the tones it gives! If you find one of these, they're well worth the investment.

(More customer reviews)This is my first 5-string bass and I like the versatility of the low B-string. Everything about this bass is much higher quality than the price would lead you to believe. The fret markers are nicely finished and it was well set up by the factory when it arrived - only minor adjustments required. The sound is great played through a professional sound system, and the guitar adjustments are easy to use and versatile. I would recommend this bass to a new or intermediate-level player who is interested in a 5-string but doesn't want to spend a lot of money. I also purchased the Schecter case to protect the new bass guitar.

(More customer reviews)I was looking to make the jump from a 4 string to a 5 string, without breaking the bank; this bass fit the bill. As with any stringed instrument, getting the right strings (personal preference), and adjusting accordingly, makes it all the more 'your' instrument. Drop the bass off w/ a professional if you are not comfortable adjusting an instrument yourself, its usually never costly(~$40 around my area), unless something is way wrong to begin with.
Having had the bass for awhile now, I must say I'm impressed in the quality for this price. Incredibly nice to play, many tonal options, and the awesome low end 'B'.

Dean Edge 8-String Bass, Active Electronics, Classic Black Review

(More customer reviews)So, I decided to buy an 8-string and learn how to play it, since I was already uver-used to playing the 4-string. You know,I wanted that high-end dominance that the 8-string provides.
This bass does all of that, and has active pickups to boot. Not that they are particularly the best active pickups (the battery dies out a little early for my tastes), but they get the job done - and can blast the hell out of a sound system with an impressive overdrive knob.
The tone is really good, by all means. Unlike the Schecter Stilletto 8, the first few frets don't buzz when you use them, and the thing maintains the octave-harmonics effect even when you use tapping or slapping effects. The strings feel really good on the fingers, and it's no problem to slide while keeping an even sound. The only problem I have is that, if one tries to use an octave string alone, it will not sound off as highly as the fat strings, which makes it a little less fun.
I would say that this is a worthwhile buy for those just starting on the 8-string, because it is reliable, has one of the best sound-qualities, and fits a good budget at $500.

Tha RBX375 has the action like a top end four string bass. You would'nt even know your playing a five string bass, except for the extra low notes. I would play this bass on the most important of gigs; and I've played some big ones. The Bass Has a warm clean sound and, with the active electronics, can provide the funkiest of pop sounds.
