Kentucky Artist A-Model Mandolin Model KM-160 in Traditional Sunburst Review

Kentucky Artist A-Model Mandolin Model KM-160 in Traditional Sunburst
Average Reviews:

I've been playing guitar for a while (mostly Contemporary Christian & Irish) and wanted to cross over onto the Mandolin. After alot of research on the web, this one consistently had the best reviews. The fact that it is one of the few in this price range with a solid (not laminate) carved spruce top and a truss rod counts for alot. They may be hard to find, but if you do, you won't be sorry.

Behringer PMP3000 1,200-Watt 16-Channel Powered Mixer Review

Behringer PMP3000 1,200-Watt 16-Channel Powered Mixer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought this powered mixer to replace a defective one at our church. Our sanctuary can seat 900 people and so it is a fairly large auditorium. The mixer has more power than the previous powered mixer and many more features. I especially like the individual channel mute buttons so we can kill a mic without having to move the gain adjustments. The only thing I did not like about this mixer is there was no block working diagram available. So we had to construct one for ourselves. To a trained eye, by using a block schematic diagram, it is easier to know how to set up the mixer for different applications and to troubleshoot a problem.
The actual steady state power output is more like 200 watts (each of the two stereo outputs)for our 8 ohm speaker system but still is greater that the old powered mixer. That is a total of 400 watts as compared to the (at first glance) advertised 1200 watts. We do not have to use the maximum gain on any channel so the output is fine for our use. There is also a headset output that follows the actual powered signal which can give you a better idea of mixed signal that is sent to the speakers and to our DVD and CD recorders.
The people at Behringer were able to answer all my questions without any problems so tech support was great. We did have a little difficulty in figuring out how to use the FX special effects (reverb, etc) generator but once we did figure it out, using it was just as advertised. You can probably guess that the instruction manual is not extensively done. But with a limited budget for an emergency purchase of a powered mixer, we are thoroughly satisfied with the quality and price.
The price is exceptional and caused a few doubting comments about how could we get what we needed for such a small price. We have been using the unit for two months now with absolutely no problems.
My suggestion is that before you purchase this unit, download the instruction manual from the Behringer site. You will see the output connection is not a 1/4 jack. If that is what you have, you will have to buy an adapter or convert the present cable connection to the new type. The adapters or connectors are not very expensive (Neutrik NA4LJX Speakon To 1/4" Mono Jack Adapter)and cost under $11 including shipping. You can optionally by the Speakon connectors and convert the speaker cable to the new connector type.

If you need superior stereo sound for small club gigs, churches or speeches, but have to keep the outboard gear to a minimum, the 16-channel PMP3000 can deliver. This 1,200- Watt mixer has built-in mic preamps and an FX processor, as well as enough power to drive mains and monitors, thanks to dual onboard 600-Watt power amps.

Massive Mono or Stunning Stereo The PMP3000 gives you the choice of 2 x 600-Watt stereo, 2 x 600-Watt dual mono or 1,200-Watt bridged mono sound. Whether the center of attention happens to be a folk trio, a speech, or a synth-rock band with mind-boggling stereo patches, the PMP3000 can accommodate. This sonic versatility also makes it an excellent choice for churches, where vocals and stereo recordings often share face time.
Classic Control, State-of-the-Art Sound Leave the mic preamps at home, because the quality of sound that was once only available in the studio is ready to go wherever you do. Eight built-in, boutique-caliber mic preamps with switchable +48 V phantom power make it possible to use either dynamic or condenser mics with the PMP3000.
Built-in Digital Effects Processor The PMP3000 is also equipped with a 24-bit FX processor, giving you 100 mind-blowing digital effect presets such as delay, chorus and reverb. Apply them to any channel, as well as to the monitors and main output. In case you're pulling double duty as sound engineer and performer, the FX processor features a footswitch jack for remote on/off.
Changing the Channels The PMP3000 gives you excellent flexibility to accommodate whatever a performance requires. Channels 1-8 are for mics, guitars and other mono instruments. Stereo channels 9-16 are ideal for keyboards. All mono channels have 3-band EQ, switchable Low Cut filter for eliminating infrasonics, and Clip LEDs to indicate when the input signal is too hot.
The Ins and Outs Use the CD/TAPE IN RCA inputs to feed in external stereo signals from CD players or tape decks. The VOICE CANCELLER switch eliminates the vocals from pre-recorded music for karaoke applications.
CD/TAPE RCA outputs send line-level signals from the mixer to a recording device. Left and right output 1/4" connectors are there in case you need to connect more power amps. Connect your monitor power amps or active monitor speakers to the MON SEND output.
A STANDBY switch mutes all mic channels during breaks, preventing the microphones from picking up noise or interference. You can leave all faders untouched while you play a CD via the CD/TAPE inputs.
The FBQ Feedback Detection system automatically shows you which frequencies are causing feedback. Just touch the FBQ button and watch the red LEDs on the 7-band graphic EQ pinpoint which frequencies to adjust for optimized sound, without the feedback.
Speaking of Optimized Output The PMP3000's POWER AMP switch toggles between three operating modes: MAIN, MON/MONO and BRIDGE (the power outputs of A and B on the back panel are added and provided at OUTPUT B). Dual mono mode allows you to use Output A for mono Mains and Output B for monitors. This clever functionality powers both your mains and monitors without the need for an additional power amp.

Casio CDP-100 88-Note Weighted Hammer Action Digital Piano Review

Casio CDP-100 88-Note Weighted Hammer Action Digital Piano
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased a used version of this based off the previous reviews. I definitely agree the weighted keyboard has a nice feel to it (this is coming from someone who's used acoustic pianos in the past) and the keyboard itself is very slim & not too heavy...easy to carry around.
What was really disappointing was the sound...it sounds a little masked, not sharp/crisp. I'm not very picky, I just wanted a full keyboard to practice on, but this was something that bothered me. I actually was able compare it to a Casio WK-200 (which is a cheaper keyboard) & surprisingly the CDP-100 sounded worse than it's cheaper counterpart.
I brushed off someone's previous comment about the sound because I figured it couldn't be that bad. It is that bad, so take this into consideration if you're planning to purchase.

I recently opened a Professional Music Recording Studio and purchased one of these mixer boards for one of the Main mixers. My Lead Engineer and I were so pleased with the performance and reflexibility of the SX4882 that I purchased another one and also a smaller version of it. Now all of my Studio is Behringer equipped with amps, effects, and All. I wouldn't even think of paying all that extra money for a Mackie when the SX4882 does everything the Mackie does and more, and even Better. Behringer is OUT-Performing all the competition, and once again on the Rise Up!

Oscar Schmidt 21 Chord Autoharp Review

Oscar Schmidt 21 Chord Autoharp
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this for my six year-old's birthday because her father and I play guitar and she always wants to be a part of the music practice. She is learning to strum in time and be dedicated to practicing an instrument. We all love playing this. Fabulous quality, take some time to tune. Buy the hard case for it and plenty of picks.

Oscar Schmidt is the world's biggest autoharp manufacturer, and the OS21C is one of their most popular models. With 21 chords, a resonant maple body and rock maple pin block, and the handcrafted quality Oscar Schmidt is known for, it's a solid, affordable autoharp that's built to last.

Oscar Schmidt AutoharpsFrom its early beginnings in the 1900s, the Oscar Schmidt Company has offered an instrument with a voice representing individual freedom for American Folk Music. With a wide variety of models to choose from, Oscar Schmidt is truly the original and only complete source for the Autoharp.
The OS21CThe OS21C 21-chord classic is one of Oscar Schmidt's most popular models, and with good reason. As a chromatic 21-chord model, it offers three rows of buttons, meaning quick, smooth chord transitions. Oscar Schmidt's patented chord bar button layout includes A, D, G, C, F, Bb, Eb and A Major; E, A, D, G and C Minor; along with B, E, A, D, G, C, F, and Bb Seventh Chords.
This autoharp features select maple construction, and is finished in an attractive sunburst gloss. A rock maple pin block provides serious strength, to assure your autoharp is always in tune.
Oscar Schmidt backs this instrument with a five-year warranty, for added peace of mind.
About Oscar Schmidt Musical InstrumentsThe Oscar Schmidt Company was founded in 1871 and incorporated in 1911. By the early 1900s, the company had five factories in Europe and a factory on Ferry Street in Jersey City. They made all kinds of stringed instruments, guitars, banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, zithers, and Autoharps.
The company prospered through the early 1920s. Oscar Schmidt instruments were sold in many rural parts of the country where no music stores existed. Salesmen distributed the products far and wide, making them available in general, small town furniture and dry goods stores. Country guitar pickers and blues musicians living in areas of the South and in Appalachia, far from the city, frequently played Oscar Schmidt instruments because they were both inexpensive and available locally. But equally important, they were often chosen solely on merits of their superior tone and volume.
Today at Oscar Schmidt, premium woods, quality hardware and modest prices create an ideal instrument. Each is inspected and adjusted in the USA by a skilled technician, your assurance for smooth fret ends, precision low action and resonant sound quality. Unequalled standards in easy playing comfort and tone response creates the perfect value... Oscar Schmidt.

Yamaha MG166C 16 Input 6 Bus Rack Mountable Mixer Review

Yamaha MG166C 16 Input 6 Bus Rack Mountable Mixer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This mixer is great, I can connect my drum set 9 mikes to the XLR plugs, and I still have several open lines. Very easy to use and it takes no time to understand the way it works. Only thing I could have done is take the one with built in effects. Now have to buy a separate Lexicon. As for the USB, I think that standard connecting to a sound card works good as well. I use it live with a Crown, in my studio with headphones, and to my MAC to record on Garage Band. It is big, but not heavy, now a rack is useful when hitting the road. A very good mixer indeed for a reasonable price.

Applause by Ovation MAE148-5 Mandolin Review

Applause by Ovation MAE148-5 Mandolin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned this instrument for about 6 months. I have an Ovation guitar and I bought this mandolin mostly because it is asthetically the same as the guitar, only smaller. The preamp (model OP-14) is not as nice as on the guitar (model OP-30). The preamp on the mandolin includes a volume control and three band EQ only, the guitar also includes a tuner, EQ on/off and mid shift switch. It does have all most folks will need though. It is difficult to replace the battery through the panel in the back of the mandolin for the OP-14 preamp, unlike the easy to replace battery in the OP-30 preamp on the guitar. It is slightly quieter when played acoustically than most A or F body mandolins, but it sounds great and has excellent tone. Like Ovation guitars, it sounds best through an acoustic amplifier. These mandolins use ball end strings which may be a bit more difficult to find at your local store than loop end strings. Despite the above noted items, this is my favourite mandolin. It stays in tune remarkably well despite temperature changes and humidity changes. The action was great from day one, the round back body is comfortable and the neck shape is is great and while it is thicker than on a fiddle, it just feels "right." It looks more like a miniture guitar than a mandolin (which I don't mind, but some might find the appearance unusual). It sounds decent unplugged and great plugged in. It is comfortable and easy to play. It is well made and the only real difference I see between it and its much more expensive Ovation brother are the machine heads. I am more than happy with mine.

Washburn Vintage Series M118SWK Mandolin Review

Washburn Vintage Series M118SWK Mandolin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Firstly, the finish on this instrument was truly amazing, complete with faux scratch marks and faded stains. The volume was also louder, as this mandolin's depth was deeper than usual. The tone was acceptable, however, it is not as smooth as other mandolins in the 200$ range. It would make an excellent strumming instrument, but for me, a classical musician, the tone is unacceptable. Also, a major problem with my instrument was that a few hours after playing it, I started to notice a lot of fret buzz in the G and D strings, and fret buzz was dangerously apparent within the A and E strings. The action also seemed way too high. I took it to a local repairer, and he claimed that 1) the nut was way too high, 2) the frets were extremely uneven, and 3) the bridge was in the wrong position. Maybe I was just unfortunate to get the odd one, but still, I am starting to doubt the reliability to even the very expensive instruments sold online. Make sure you play the instrument before you buy it.

Oscar Schmidt OS21CQTBL Autoharp Review

Oscar Schmidt OS21CQTBL Autoharp
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for an easy string instrument to play and to have my friends play along with my accordion. Overall, it's a good quality Autoharp and Autoharps are really easy to play. However, it didn't have enough volume to be heard along with the accordion. So I returned it and purchased an Oscar Schmidt OS45CE 21 Chord Model Autoharp with Built-in Pickup & 4-band EQ. The fine tuners alone are worth the extra cost. And, of course, the volume is what I needed when some one is playing along. Anyway, the blue harp (OS21CQTBL) is okay if you don't mind tuning with the pegs only and if you're playing solo or with other softer volume instruments.

Mackie PPM1012 12-Channel, 1600-Watt Powered Desktop Mixer Review

Mackie PPM1012 12-Channel, 1600-Watt Powered Desktop Mixer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a musician playing in clubs and all types of other venues since the sixties. Some of the bands I've been part of used massive PA systems to get a quality sound. I'm talking racks of power amps, EQ's, Effects , etc. etc..
That was then, this is now. This Mackie board does it all and does it all extremely well !! You'll have plenty of headroom. There is more than ample power when you need it, just waiting to kick in and support your vocals and anything else you run through this board. The effects are superb with two high quality effects processors that you can tweek out and blend the effects to your liking. The clarity of this board is so good that all I have to run is a slight curve on my equalizers to get a nice clean and clear sound. Match this unit up with a high quality pair of speakers and a couple of good powered subs, and you're sound is Happening !!
Sizing down and maintaining good sound at my age is important to me. Other powered consoles I used and thought were OK just don't compare to this. Having a well-polished act, I need the best sounding equipment with the smallest footprint. Although a tad bit heavy, this mixer takes the place of hundreds of pounds worth of PA.
Now, I can't wait to get to the gig and hear my new Mackie. I couldn't be more pleased !!
Jim, SW Fla.

Ultra-light and rack-mountable, the Mackie PPM1012 professional powered desktop mixer features two ridiculously robust power amps for mains and/or monitors (800W + 800W). With 1600 watts of system power, this mixer provides all the raw power that you need. Things can get pretty intense out there, and your gear needs to be able keep up the pace. We custom designed the PPM1012 with Class-D amps, which are cool-running and boast maximum efficiency, keeping your sound pumping until they start kicking people out. We had to include Mackie's proven Fast Recovery circuitry, eliminating the risk of pesky amp latching. The result is a distortion free mix even when pushing peak levels. The built-in limiter can go toe-to-toe with the most popular outboard stereo limiters used in live sound today, protecting your speakers from damage. The limiter's attack and release times are specifically selected to address full-bandwidth music and will not muddy things up by adding any unwanted pumping. PPM mixers are surprisingly lightweight, but tremendously powerful. You can push the PPM608 to its maximum output, distortion free!

I'm a guitarist but I have played a few mandolins. The Washburn M3SWK has potential but not right out of the box. The two I tried and returned had issues. the first one fretted out on the fourth string at the octave and the second one came with the bridge saddle broken. These were issues I didn't want to deal with after waiting for a week to get the mandolin. If set up properly I think the M3SWK will sound and play reasonably well. but there are plenty of other brands to compare with in this price range. I would suggest buying one from an online music shop that will set the instrument up before shipping it to you.

When I cashed in my 401K to buy this set, I thought that Bob Dylan would arrive with this box of seven harmonicas under his arm and perform "Blowin' in the Wind" at my son's wedding. That is why I ponied up for next day shipping. Not only did Bob Dylan not appear, but all you get is seven used harmonicas with writing on them inside a nice box. I repeat, these harmonicas are not new! They have been used! Bob Dylan's spit is in them. I mean, really! I love Bob Dylan, but how un-hygienic! Ick!

You make history, of course! Throughout his iconic career, Bob Dylan has maintained a special relationship with the Hohner company, showcasing their harmonicas in his music. Hohner is now honoring that association by offering a collection of limited edition, hand-signed Marine Band harmonicas to the public. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
