(More customer reviews)I was undecided between a Fender and a Gibson Les Paul. I checked out U-tube reviews and sounds and took the leap of faith and purchased the 2008 Gibson Les Paul Standard with 50's neck. WOW. Say it with me now... WOW. Absolutely beautiful fit and finish on this guitar. This is the type of guitar that you pass down to your children. It has a very throaty voice unlike the Fenders. Fenders were very twangy to me and that's fine if you like that sort of sound. Not for me. The guitar has a very ballsy/throaty/blues-rock sound to it. I have it paired with a Line 6 75 watt amp. They are a very good pairing. You'll love this amp as well. It provide hundreds of different sounds at the touch of several buttons. However, lets get back to this guitar. I know it's a lot of money, but you will not be disappointed. Holds it tune, and is a bit lighter as well. This is the type of instruments that you have a hard time putting down since it sounds soooo good.

Gibson L-4 CES Electric Guitar, Mahogany, Vintage Sunburst Review

(More customer reviews)I've been itching for the chance to review my guitar ever since I got it. Now that the honeymoon is over it's time.
Mine is in sunburst finish. It has the maple sides and back as opposed to the modern mahogany. Mine was made in 2000. The only modification I've made to mine are that I installed two Seymour Duncan Antiquity P-9o pickups, made a compensated ebony saddle, and replaced the Gibson tuners with something a little more fitting to my tastes. Which was the first era Kluson style tuners instead of the modern ones that use the ferruls and large holes.
Anyhow, I've been playing guitar for over 17 years and have owned ONLY archtops. Many, many of them. I was a Gretsch man most of that time with passing fancies in just about every brand. I always wanted a Gibson archtop because they always stuck out in my mind as something very special. They kept their prices high enough to keep the rif-raf away from them and I love that. Well, for the most part.
I can't say enough good about this guitar. It's a little smaller than I'd like, but that's what the L-5 and Super 400 are for. It sounds absolutely heavenly to me. I play CLEAN. All tube...all the time. When I'm not plugged in it's more than loud enough to play in the car, lying in bed, or out by the campfire. It's acoustically valid and that's my primary concern.
The fit and finish are just fine and it leaves nothing to be desired. The flamed maple is darn pretty and the spruce top really shows nice wide grain.
Once I got this guitar my vintage collectors pieces took a back seat. That's how nice these guitars are. I would buy another one in a heartbeat, sight-unseen. I would not be worried. I played several ES-175s before buying this guitar and they can't hold a candle to it. They felt heavy and stiff to me. Not life at all.
I play mostly finger style country & western, jazz, blues, and a little rockabilly. This guitar makes me play better because I practice more. I want to play all the time. And that's AFTER the honeymoon. I've had this guitar since March.
I see so many people these days with archtops, but so few high end ones. That's what I love about this guitar. For the price you pay you'd better know how to treat it right. This is not a toy. This is for grown-ups and people who have arrived at a place in their playing where they can justify the finer things.
The only things I didn't like about the guitar I promtly changed, so I love everything about it. There's not a thing wrong with it.

Epiphone Prophecy Futura Custom FX (Floyd, EMG-81/85 Pickups) Review

(More customer reviews)I'll be honest. I don't think this guitar is for everyone. Other than receiving the actual guitar in a mess (de-tuned, very very very low action, ridiculous unplayable buzzing and offset bridge etc, etc....don't worry... did not buy it from this particular seller XD), After i got it fixed, it played excellent. I can't judge it too harshly because i've been playing a jackson rr-3 for 2 years, and the floyd rose on that particular model of guitar is completely flush with the body, and i know most floyds are not, but rather raised, above the body. Also, the pick-ups are a bit too close together for my liking, and i have a really hard time getting harmonics out of the g-string, but that's just my experience, and i would say 'because of that' but i really don't know if that's the cause. And of course it's about twice the weight of an rr3 so you get a bit sore after a while, but i can't complain about that. Other than that, it has a nice fast neck, reasonably slim, plays nice, but pick-ups seem a bit over-responsive.

Gibson Les Paul Standard Traditional Pro Electric Guitar, Ebony Review

(More customer reviews)This guitar is freaking awesome! I love it! I've been dreaming of owning a Les Paul for years and finally got the chance to buy one. The thing that swayed me to the Pro over a Studio or Standard was the coil splitting and pickup choice (57 classic & BB3). Coil splitting REALLY adds a lot of tonal variety, and these pups give that warm, crunchy tone that I love for blues/classic rock. I slightly preferred the thicker 59 neck of the Studio but the thin 60's neck of the Trad Pro is still really nice to play even with my big hands. Great sustain. Guitar came well set up with Gibson 10's strings, no buzzing, nice fast action. I'll probably do a bit of tweaking though, and put some Super Slinky 9's on it. Guitar is heavy (not weight reduced), but I kinda like that weighty feel. The Trad Pro is way better looking than the Studio and I like the cream pick guard and uncovered pickups. The cherry and desert burst guitars were also damn good looking but I like the clean lean and mean look of the ebony. The ebony also cost $100 less which matters to me!
The guitar fits nice and snugly in the supplied case. It seems strong and well made (made in Canada, yay) and has a padlockable latch.
If you can't fork out the extra $ then the Studio is still a great guitar (the Studio faded is really great value for money!). The standard is awesome too but IMO the Trad pro is more versatile for tone, and a good bit cheaper.
I'll only ever be able to buy one LP and I'm glad it was this one!

Gibson Custom ES-335 Dot Electric Guitar, Faded Cherry Satin, Plain Maple Review

(More customer reviews)I wasn't even shopping for one when I got it. I was looking for headphones. Honest. It called to me, though. I can still hear it. "Take me home," it pleaded. I just couldn't say no and thus acquired my first Gibson six string. Learned to play on a lovely SG style Melody Maker a long time ago and had an EB2D bass for a long time but never a six string.
What a beauty! Gorgeous finish, great looking headstock and hefty without being uncomfortable. After playing Fenders and Ovations for years I had to re-do all the patches on my multi-effects stomp box because the 335 is just too powerful compared to those guitars. Those Classic Humbuckers will take your face off if you're not careful! The neck was comfortable right from the get-go and has remained so. The tuners are precise and easy to use and the one neck adjustment I've had to perform couldn't have been easier. I can never find local replacements for the Brite Wires that came with it (nice strings!) but D'Addario EXL110s sound great on it so that's what I use. The guitar's sound is clear and unique with all sorts of tone options available for any song. It's so much fun to play I don't even bother using an amp when noodling around between gigs - another trick that's hard to accomplish on a solid body Fender. The satin finish glosses up over time and looks great. Heck, even the case is gorgeous.
The only gripes I can think of are that it could have used a bit more thorough checking prior to shipping - the B string was binding at the nut when I bought it, necessitating a trip to the local luthier/tech and the saddles don't appear to have been notched for the strings the way I'm told is normal. I also wish they'd use the same size screws for the strap pins as it's a bit of a pain to retro-fit my preferred strap locks on them with the two different holes. (My EB2D had the same oddball screw arrangement.) Rather than fussing with it, I just use "over-the-strap" twist-on Dunlop locks.
This guitar is similar to the ones I grew up seeing and hearing people like Clapton, Johnny Rivers and Justin Hayward play. Never really planned on getting one and now that I have it I'm scared to take it to some of the places I play but that's OK. Everyone needs to treat themselves to a really nice axe every now and then and this one's mine. :-)

History speaks for itself. The ES-335 is one of the most important guitars of all time. Right from its introduction in 1958 as the world's first semi-hollowbody electric guitar it has been a mainstay of players eager to balance the gorgeous, round, mellow tones perfect for jazz and blues with the edge and sustain of a full-blooded solidbody.

Countless music legends have immortalized Gibson's ES-335.

Today the Gibson Custom Shop creates exacting duplicates of the ES-335 as it first left the Kalamazoo plant in 1958. That year just 267 were built, but the original vintage 335s grew steadily in popularity, peaking in 1967 thanks largely to Eric Clapton's high-profile use of a cherry ES-335 in the band Cream.
Body and Finishes The Custom Shop ES-335 is available with many finish options, reflecting the color choices that have evolved over the model's 50-year history. In Satin finish, trans black and cherry colors are available, with a plain maple top, back, and rims. Ebony is available only in plain maple. With the figured maple top, back, and rims option, cherry, tri-burst, antique natural, light burst, and vintage sunburst colors are available. Wine red, trans brown, Beale Street Blue, and cinnamon burst finishes are also available in limited quantities, along with gold hardware, for figured and for plain maple models.
Regardless of color, the ES-335 retains its classic proportions: 16 1/2-inches wide, 20-inches long, and 1 3/4-inches deep. The neck is one-piece mahogany beneath a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearloid inlays and a single-ply binding. Additionally, there's single-ply binding on the top and back.
Hardware All hardware is nickel, and there's a classic ABR-1 bridge with a lightweight aluminum stopbar tailpiece. Neck length is 24 3/4 inches with a 1 11/16-inch nut width. Satin finish models have vintage style tulip shaped tuners, while figured and plain tops come with Grover kidney-shaped tuners. All Custom Shop ES-335s have powerful '57 Classic humbucking pickups, two volume pots, two tone pots, and a three-way pickup selector switch. They are strung with Gibson Brite Wire .010 strings and come safely nestled in a black levant case.
Famous Players Spanning numerous decades, the ES-335 has been in the hands of countless musicians. From Chuck Berry's numerous performances to Alvin Lee's incendiary performance at Woodstock to Police's 2008 tour in NYC, the ES-335 has been the instrument of choice for any players seeking gorgeous, round, mellow tones, tempered with the edge and sustain of a full-blooded solidbody electric like the Les Paul.
Nitrocellulose Finish Applying a nitrocellulose finish to any Gibson guitar is one of the most labor-intensive elements of the guitar-making process. A properly applied nitro finish requires extensive man hours, several evenly applied coats, and an exorbitant amount of drying time. But this fact has never swayed Gibson into changing this time-tested method, employed ever since the first Gibson guitar was swathed with lacquer back in 1894. Why? For starters, a nitro finish dries to a much thinner coat than a polyurethane finish, which means there is less interference with the natural vibration of the instrument, allowing for a purer tone. A nitro finish is also a softer finish, which makes it easily repairable. You can touch up a scratch or ding on a nitro finish, but you can't do the same on a poly finish. In addition, a nitro finish is very porous in nature, and actually gets thinner over time. It does not "seal" wood in an airtight shell--as a poly finish does--and allows the wood to breathe and age properly.
All VOS (Vintage Original Spec) series guitars will use a proprietary process that includes unique steps for staining, wet-sanding, and hand-rubbing; subsequently the guitars reflect what a well-cared for 40-year-old guitar looks like. The result is a remarkable patina that will delight even the most discriminating enthusiast.

Both of these Basses are my favorite.It has the Action and rumble of a Rickenbacker 4001 and the flexibilty and Tone of a Fender Jazz Bass. Great for a Musician starting out who cant quite afford a Gibson.For the price,you can own the Gibson Quality,even though its is an Epiphone. My only Complaint is that it is not available as a 5 string, but can be tuned as low as CFBE(top to bottom) with out distortion or clipping.

(More customer reviews)I like to play metal, and "palm mutting" swet has erase part of the dark color in the Floyd Rose Bridge 1 mounth after I received the guitar. I recomend to buy a guitar with a silver Floyd Rose. I like dark the most, but I never thought it would miss the color that fast...
If you don't know or have somebody who can help you to tune the floating tremolo, is better thinking to buy other kind of tremolo, it's a big pain in the butt.
I have a Les Paul (double brass pick ups), a '63 Fender Jaguar (double couple of Seymour Duncan humbuckers), an this (EMG's 60 & 81 active pick ups), and it sounds very good, but I prefer the sound of the Les Paul, even for metal (but that's what I like). I have to recognise the LTD is amazing for shred, is lighter, softer and cheaper, also is better for play live stuff, is very versatile. Keep in mind that when you do palm mutting, if you put your palm against the floating bridge, the guitar can miss the tone

Very versatile, flexible, easy to play , great tone, powerfull and not as heavy as a regular les paul. With the floyd rose,coil split capability, new neck design you have just about every conceivable option possible in a quality guitar, from jazz to heavy metal. Very expensive, forced me to trade in my srv,gibson acoustic and my fender twin to bring down the price, but I couldn't help it. I had to have it.

(More customer reviews)I picked this guitar up at guitar center the other day and havent looked back since. It is an amzing guitar. The emg pickups sound great distorted or clean. The floyd rose is outstanding and fairly sturdy. NO tuning problems at all. The coil tapping is a bonus if you needed anything else. The black makes it a very calm looking guitar. I suggest this a 2nd level guitar vs a first because of the floyd rose. Floyd roses are very hard to tune and drop tune if you arn't fimilar. I suggest a epiphone special ii first. Which is also a good guitar. Once you know your sktyle (drop tuning etc) then buy this guitar as a 2nd guitar. BUT KEEP THE FIRST ONE. Floyd roses cant be changed so keep one without a tremelo ready. Overall amazing guitar.

I typically dont believe in buying a LOW END of anything as you get what you are paying for, I wanted a Gibson and was just turned off by the price of similar Gibson (the one I wanted was 2695.00) which at that price, Im afraid to play it everyday.. afraid to carry it around.. I did alot of comparing the two guitars.. and this won. The finish is GORGEOUS. It has grover tuners.. this sucker stays in tune... I have no complaints... great sustain and Im very happy with the tone. Does a Gibson have better pickups.. YES.. you can change the pickups and knobs.. and for a couple of hundred dollars more you have a Gibson Les Paul.. the price is so great that you dont sweat the knocking around.. I would buy this guitar again in a minute.

Epiphone Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar, Alpine White Review

(More customer reviews)I bought mine over 2 weeks ago at Guitar center and was struck by the Alpine White color, which I found out was a Custon Shop limited edition. When I got it home, I noticed that it wouldn't stay in tune and that was due to the fact that it wasn't set up properly upon the leaving the factory in China, contrary to what the inspection label on the back of the headstock says. The intonation, along with the string and pickup height, were in need of adjustment and once I took care of those problems, I was amazed at how well this guitar sounded and how great it stayed in tune. The rest of the guitar from the frets to the electronics, seems to be very well built, but I would've preferred block inlays instead of the dot ones on the neck. Other than that,there was nothing that I could find wrong with this guitar at all. This is a very reasonably priced instrument for the beginner and advanced musician as far as I'm concerned, and I'm speaking from over 36 years of playing. This is a welcome alternative for those of us who can't afford the outrageous prices for the US made Gibsons, and seeing that Epiphone is owned by them, you really more or less have the same thing, just made in a different country, that's all! Great guitar for a great price!

The original idea for the Epiphone Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar was to create a somewhat lower-priced Paul by dispensing with some cosmetics. Gibson Les Paul Standard Traditional Pro Electric Guitar, Vintage Sunburst Review

(More customer reviews)Gibson Les Paul Standards are a bit showier then the lower priced studio models but never count Studios out, this is a Standard Traditional Pro which also feature coil taps. Coil taps split the pickups, so even with your hefty bridge pickup (a BurstBucker 3) you can get a single coil bluesy sound. You will find the neck pickup to be a 57' Classic, which only further compliments the look and sound, presenting that much more authenticity to replicating a vintage tone. Hardware is the usual chrome, and tuners are locking grovers. Those not familiar with LP's there is a 3-way toggle switch/pickup selector. With the coils `tapped' leaving the switch in the middle position can lead to many unique tones, play around with both volume pots while in this position really interesting.
The neck is of a 60's profile, the fret board is made of high quality rosewood. The looks of the fret board are upped with the trapezoid inlays. Yes this LP has a binding (`antique binding'), it's rare to find a LP without one. Standard Traditional Pro models are not chambered, those hunting literally a more traditional LP sound this is a good start. Notes are clearer, where as often times chambered LP can make sharp notes fatter. Crème pickguards are another way these LP pop visually. Three variants are currently available, ebony, vintage sunburst, and heritage cherry sunburst. The vintage sunburst looks similar to a (Gibson) Les paul Studio Deluxe, minus the grain effect. The neck, oh and backside too, has a satin finish, similar in feel to some other models like the (Epiphone) Les Paul Ultra, well the original model not the II which I have yet to play. Supposedly this finish helps resonation, honestly I don't know, feels nice though. The top is a high-gloss lacquer finish.
The sound what you'd expect from an old school style Les Paul, especially considering the whole BurstBucker 3 ordeal. Heavy thick overdriven rock chords, ashy bluesy single notes, and a brooding clean. Muddiness isn't a problem here, this LP really comes through. As mentioned earlier with the coil taps expect versatility, but to be honest, if you lift the volume pot while having the selector on `Treble', the sound (on clean channels) can be very brittle and twangs of something umm unique.
So if you're hunting down another LP for your collection, or wish to begin with one of these models make sure you are familiar with all the small touches. Things like being non chambered, the finish, the pickups, and body when all combined can affect the sound. Also really make sure you are familiar with the BurstBucker 3's, also luckily this isn't the case, but one may benefit from reading about pickups that aren't waxed. I'm posting this review, as this was one of the guitars I was choosing between awhile back for another LP. I ultimately ended up choosing the Studio Deluxe model over this (which is cheaper), but this is definitely not a guitar to overlook. You get the full package, sound, looks, playability, and versatility.

If you're looking for the essentials of a Les Paul but for a fraction of the price of a Gibson (not to mention the weight...your shoulders and back will love you for it!), you just can't beat an Epiphone!
I've heard many times from other musicians I've talked to that an Epiphone Les Paul is not a "real" Gibson, it's a Les Paul "copy", etc. These couldn't be any further from the truth. Epiphone is a Gibson company and they use all Gibson manufactured pickups, electronics and hardware. The chief difference between Gibsons and Epiphones is where they're manufactured; Gibsons are assembled in Nashville and Epiphones in Korea. Both are constructed with mahogany bodies and rosewood fretboards, but the only other difference is that Gibson uses AA grade or higher maple for the tops and necks and Epiphone uses mahogany for the necks and alder for the tops.
Many players believe that heavier woods makes a difference in the tone, and in some instances, that's true. But I've played a Gibson LP Standard and an Epiphone LP Standard back to back through the same amp and I heard virtually no difference in the tone. The only thing different between the two was the weight, that's all. The Epiphone was lighter and easier to play sitting down and especially standing, and to me, it sounded every bit as good as the Gibson played both clean and "dirty" (distorted).
In my band, I play my Epiphone through a 100-watt Marshall combo amp; with the main settings on the amp all set on 5 and miked up through the PA, the sound is incredible; if you're up close to the stage, it'll take your head off! I'm not knocking Gibsons at all; I owned one myself once before and loved it. They're nice guitars and worth owning one if you've got the bread to buy it. But if you're on a "budget" like most people, I say dare to compare and simply let your ears be your guide; strap on an Epiphone, crank it up and just let it rip...I guarantee you'll love it!
