(More customer reviews)This was an outstanding buy. I saved over $100 purchasing this direct. The product arrived timely and without any damage. I am currently enjoying the bass and it's many features.
The bass is very lightweight due to it's unique body design and lack of a headstock. The bridge tuners are extremely accurate when tuning the instrument. I'm really enjoying the DB tuner feature which allows me to set up an alternate tuning for the low E string. Currently, I've found that this sounds best down to a C# versus all the way down to a B. However, I'm still experimenting with this awesome feature.
The bass holds it's tune extremely well. During a performance or rehearsal, I never have to tune it once it has been initially tuned...even after hours of aggressive play. The only time it needs tuning is after sitting for a day or so and that's to be expected. Even then, the tuning adjustment is usually minor.
My other surprise is how incredible this bass sounds. Even unprocessed, the bass has an incredible vibrant tone. The 2 pickups give you a lot of tonal varieties. The bridge pickup is snappy with a nice subtle rattle to it. The neck pickup is warm and smooth. Both pickups together produce a full rich sound. I ran this unprocessed through a keyboard amp and the pure, unprocessed sound of the 'Berger blew me away. Naturally, this gives a great foundation for using this bass through external signal processing.
This is my first bass and I couldn't be more pleased with my choice.

Hohner B2ADB-BK Headless Electric Bass (4 String, Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I received my bass and the clutch tuning knob was snapped off of the bridge due to poor packing. Amazon replaced it immediately and despite the second bass again being poorly packed, it arrive intact. This is a good bass. The bridge tuner adjustments are a little coarse compared to head tuners but they do work once you get used to them. The drop-D clutch does not seem to hold tune but since I do not use I am not worried about it. The bass sounds good, easy to play, much lighter than my Ibanez bass and the pre-amp works very well. The bass arrives with little to no instructions so you may want to research it before buying. I was able to get instructions off the internet. Make sure you unplug after playing or you will quickly kill the pre-amp battery if you leave it plugged in. Accessing the electronics requires removing several screws and the panel on mine was fitted so tightly I had to pry it off. A lithium 9V battery is recommended for longer battery life. The finish is very good. The neck is straight and it was pretty close to setup straight out of the box. I am enjoying playing it.

Behringer BXL1800 180-Watt 2-Channel Bass Workstation Review

(More customer reviews)This is the second BXL1800 I have owned. The first one was perfect. It's small enough to practice with and has balanced XLR out for playing live. Like I said, the first one was perfect. Unfortunately, I sold the first one and ordered another one. The new one was great for a few weeks, then it started sounding distorted, even at very low volume. No amount of adjusting or EQing could fix it, so I decided it must be a bad speaker and ordered a replacement. Upon removing the original speaker, I noticed that it has a 4 Ohm speaker (very odd for a single speaker setup), and that the speaker is only rated for 120 Watts! Why would they put a speaker into a cabinet that cannot handle the amount of power that the amp is supplying?
All I can say is be careful with Behringer. They are low cost, but apparently not always good quality.

Hofner Icon Series Vintage Violin Bass, Transparent Black Review

I fell in like with the look of the Hofner Icon at the local Guitar Center and bought it. After a month of practice, lessons, and research, I happened upon a Hofner 500/1 vintage '63 reissue violin bass (hand made in Germany) at a hole-in-the wall music shop in downtown Chicago and fell in LOVE with it and it's amazing flatwound strings! I dropped nearly $2,000 and brought this beautiful instrument (such high quality that it should qualify as a piece of furniture) and returned my Icon with no regrets.
I may actually purchase another Icon soon and throw some flatwound strings (Hofners from North Coast Music) and use it for my travel bass when on vacation.
Here's what you need to know about the available Hofner basses:

-Made in China with Chinese electronics that can be quirky
-Fit and finish is adequate for the price point
-Regular roundwound strings with some fret buzz depending on setup

-A pain in the butt getting a case sometimes! Go EBay or Amazon!

(More customer reviews)Gibson makes great guitars. Their lower end Epiphone brand has a similar look and sound for a substantially lower price.
This bass is great for beginner/intermediate players and sounds great. You will need a decent sized amp to get a good bass tone. The transparent black is nice looking with a wavy look. The strings that it comes with are not bad, but I changed them after a few weeks. The fretboard is okay, nothing fancy, but the guitar is only $299. At this price range, you are getting good quality and the instrument looks really good. I would recommend playing one at a local guitar store first if possible to make sure it feels and sounds right. You should expect to pay about the same amount on an amp or more if you will playing in a band.

Have owned one for over 13 years. Electronics are 1st rate, lots of Range, Play Jazz, Country or Pop and Slap. Stays in tune very well. The balance is good when standing or sitting. Craftsmanship and Finish are second to None. Frets easy and the sustain is excellent. Good pricing for a Made In California USA instrument.
No problems after 13 years of playing.while the ABS plastic case is good, It will warp if left in direct sun light, even for a few minutes.

When I want to practice it's good to use if I don't have an amp since it's a hollow body. The minor down side is that it feels cheap and fragile, but it doesn't really bother me.
All in all, I love this bass!

I have been playing for about six years now and never thought I would buy a Squier. I have a Highway 1 jazz bass that no other bass has come close to in terms of comfort, playability, and sound until now. I really lovethe p-bass tone and I would not be able to guess that this was a squier if you covered up the word squier on the headstock. My only gripe is a minor one, I am used to the satin finish on my Highway 1 so the thicker gloss on the neck of the Squier took a little getting used to. This is an incredible bass. Compared to the cheaper Squiers this thing blows them out of the water. My dad even said I was stupid for getting a Squier, then he played it and was blown away by the quality of this fine instrument. I cannot say enough good things about this instrument. If you are going to buy a p-bass, are looking for quality at a low price, this is what you need.

Just had mine setup for the first time - I've had it about 3 months - and it only required some minor truss tightening - also replaced the strings - since I'd worn out the initial set. This is a wonderful instrument - at a very reasonable price.

Hofner Icon Series Beatle Bass Guitar - Sunburst Review

(More customer reviews)As a professional musician and university music professor, I have pretty high standards. Of course, I'm primarily a woodwind performer, and although I've fooled around with guitar since high school, this was my first electric bass guitar. Hofner's Icon model has cheaper wood and generally some cheaper parts than their professional level basses, but I love this instrument. The short scale is perfect for moving seamlessly between guitar and bass and makes technically demanding passages easier than on a standard scale bass. I've gotten to the point where I've taken the bass to parties and played a couple of paying gigs with it. The intonation is pretty good, although it is not up to the level of professional instruments. The main issue is that 1st fret notes are very sharp. The movable bridge is a little tricky to work with, too. I found that I just had to find a spot where there was a fairly decent blend of string height, string angle, and scale for the intonation. Generally, the switches and pickups seem to work pretty well, although the switches get just a little flaky when the temperature and humidity conditions change rapidly. I find that the strings that come with it work ok, but that flat wound strings really improve it, making it useful for rock and jazz playing. I did have to do some minor work on the frets, since two of them were set a little lower than the rest, but just a little adjustment eliminated fret buzz. It's no pre-CBS Fender, to be sure, but for less than $400, it looks good, sounds good, and is lightweight and easy to play.

Instead of always having to plug in my electric and move equipment from room to room I decided on a acoustic bass. I can play with the background music and still hear myself. It was a little bigger then I expected. The sound is spongey but very clear. When you plug in if you don't have a processor the on board tone controls work great. The strings have a little more space between them compared to an electric and that took a little getting used to. The on board tuner is accurate. As far as the body, neck, and overall product I have no complaints. I love this guitar and am so happy I bought it.

Epiphone Viola Electric Bass Guitar, Vintage Sunburst Review

(More customer reviews)For years, if you wanted to play the electric bass that Paul played in The Beatles, you had to fork over around $2,000.00 for a Hofner bass. Yes, they are made a lot better today than when Paul bought his first one for about $175.00 in 1961. But most folks can't afford that. A cost effective alternative in the same style has always been the Epiphone Viola bass.
For about a quarter of the cost of a new Hofner 500-1, you can have the look and sound close to that of the original, with some differences and caveats. The Hofner is a hollow body bass, which means that there is an open space inside the body of the guitar. This is one of the main contributors to it's original sound, which is more subdued, and mellow than more modern solid body basses, which have no chamber.
The Viola is also of the hollow body design. Though the electronics on the Viola are radically different from a Hofner, with the two humbucking pickups, a set of tape wrapped Hofner style strings, and amp modeling, you are right there back in Liverpool's Cavern Club.
I bought my Viola several years ago and am delighted with it's vintage styling and classic British Invasion sound. For those who are interested in it's stats:
* Top: Laminated flame maple
* Neck: Maple, set
* Chrome hardware
* 30.5" short scale
* 2 pickups: NYR & NYT mini humbuckers
* Nut width: 1.65"
* Fingerboard: Rosewood
* Inlay: Dots

My Viola bass was manufactured in Korea and is flawless in construction, fit and finish. In 2003, Epiphone, opened a factory in China to keep up with world demand.
Recently, Hofner has released two new lines of their Hofner Beatle bass. The Hofner Icon bass is a close approximation of the original, even though many have compared it more to the Viola bass. It sells for around $400.00.
The Hofner Contemporary bass is a close ( though not exact) replica of their main line of Beatle bass. It is a beautiful bass guitar and sells for around $800.00.
That still may be a little high for those who want the look and sound but can't afford a Hofner. I can highly recommend the Epiphone Viola Bass as a good sounding and easy playing alternative to the original!
