Yup.
I've used Line6, Studio Devil, and some other unmentionables over the past few years and I just could not accept them as serious tools. Useful for practicing quietly at home in the late night hours? Sure...but when it came to using them for recording, forget it. Everything seemed off, from overall tone to playing dynamics. It was always obvious that you were using software. So for a long time, I just steered clear of these tools, convinced that it would take some long-term research and development to solve the many issues.
But I'm pleased to say that products like Amplitube are giving me hope. I am very impressed with their version 3 and the newer Amplitube Fender release. Someone really has their act together at IK Multimedia and shows a great understanding of how guitar sound is produced overall. Plugging in and finding quite convincing tones ranging from the sweetness of a stereo chorus Roland JC120 to the onslaught of a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier with a distortion box out front always brings a smile. There are some less-than-inspiring presets, but these may suit some ears more than mine.
However, the real power is in Amplitube's flexibility. You can take any preset that's in the neighborhood of what you're looking for and then tweak it until you're happy. Everything from stomp boxes to the amp face dials to rack effects and microphone placement, it's all there. You can even tell it which mics (e.g., Shure SM57, etc...) to use, where to place them relative to the speaker, how far you want them from the front of the cabinet, and what type of room (e.g., small studio, hall, etc...) to use. The differences are sometimes subtle, but everything adds up to an overall sound. And once you have the whole configuration "just so", you can save the settings to your own preset folder and then call them up whenever. No need to write everything down and hope that you've accounted for each variable. The software takes care of it for you.
We're using Amplitube with our Mbox 2/Pro Tools LE 8 setup and it makes demo recording so much easier. Now the hardest part of recording is setting up the drums and vocals, as the two guitars and the bass are easy to configure and record. Not to mention that the direct in analog-to-digital recording is clean and free from ambient noise, so there's only minimal scrubbing required during mixdown.
I've read some reviewers out there speaking poorly of Amplitube and about modeling software in general. The central argument is always the same: poor tone and playing dynamics. I can understand this complaint and in the past, I'd be right there with them, chanting the Luddite opposition to digital anything. But not anymore. I'd recommend that the diehards out there demo the newest versions of these products and think again about how things are shaping up. I've been playing on and off for almost twenty years and in that time, I've owned and jammed on a lot of different amps, including a Fender Champ, Deluxe Reverb, and Twin Reverb, a Dr. Z Mazerati, Engl Powerball, two different Marshalls, and a couple Vox. I'm not a tone snob, but my ear is pretty good. To me, the new wave of modeling software is really starting to nail down the tone factor. Moreover, they're getting much better at rendering variables and dynamics such as pick placement and attack.
Is it perfect yet? Eh...maybe not. But things have come a long way and in my opinion, it's good enough for most recording efforts. Pros out there may not agree, but I'm speaking here to everyday folks like me who just enjoy writing and recording music and playing out live on occasion. Note that for live applications, you'll really want a way to access the presets more conveniently, like IK's StompIO floorboard, which is another considerable investment by itself.
Bottom line: give it a try and I really think that (unless you're a tone snob) you'll be impressed.

Empress ParaEq with Boost Review

(More customer reviews)I typically play a Gibson 335, Les Paul, Strat or Tele through a Tone King Meteor II (high end boutique version of a 60's fender blackface). I usually get either lost in the mix or dominate it. With this pedal I found two narrow frequencies that caused the problem and cut them. Then I add a wide range for a top boost. Problem solved--AMAZING tone that sits in the mix like in the studio.
It's a boring concept. $250 for an EQ? It's very worth it. I have owned EQ pedals before and not really understood the point. I suppose the quality of this is so superior that dialing in something useful is much easier -- I DO NOT like graphic eq's.
It's the only pedal on my extensive pedalboard that i would not ever consider replacing (although the empress superdelay, while quirky is a close second)

Empress Tremolo Review

(More customer reviews)I got an Amazon gift card for my birthday with the instructions to buy something fun with it, to splurge a little. This is what I chose. I don't really *need* a tremolo (I'm not a performer), but it sure is fun to play with!
I researched a lot of tremolo pedals before deciding on this one (thanks, ProGuitarShop! I owe you one). I chose it primarily because of what I heard, but also due to the impressive amounts of controls that are available. If there's a certain trem sound you're trying to achieve, I can almost guarantee you can get it with this box! I won't go over all the controls because that's in the product description. I can tell you that tap tempo is *awesome*, almost a must-have. It will spoil you. The tube style trem is great for all-around applications, while the square style is a lot of fun to play with. I haven't used the triangle much yet, but then again I just got the box.
Besides tap tempo, another feature that is unique and awesome is the rhythm settings. Check around on YouTube for some demos of them. It's a nice touch that really sets this product apart from other tremolo effects.
On the negative side, there are a few small things that I don't like, though not deal-breakers. First, the tempo LED will continue to flash as long as the unit has power. That can be annoying for home hobbyists like myself. Second, there is no way to save presets. Finally, this unit does not run on battery power, yet an AC adapter must be purchased separately.
Even with those few minor concerns, I still rate this product as five stars due to sound and features.

Absolutely no noise or interference. It replaced my Voodoo Labs AC power and Pedal Power II. This unit is very well designed and well built. The information I found on line was a little sketchy and careful inspection of the pics online weren't consistent. I took a chance on buying this hoping it would power everything I needed and luckily it worked out.

There's a LOT that this processor can do. Here's how I use it, and that's just one of many ways you can configure your G-System:
I Have the G-System split into the rack and controller. I plug my guitar into the G-System, and use the G-System insert loop for my preamp. then plug the output of the G-System into my power amp. Then, there's only one cable going to the controller from the G-System rack. It's a clean and quick setup for gigs or rehearsal.
As far as the effects that are included, I haven't even begun to tap into all of them, but I have used quite a few. Currently, I'm using the Advanced Chorus, Advanced Flanger, Single Delay, Dynamic Delay, Pitch Shifter and the Boost function. There's a bunch more effects like the basic versions of the Chorus and Flanger, Wah-wah effects, whammy, a compressor, filter, phaser, and each of those effects is super configurable. The G-System also does relay switching. For instance, if you want to change the channel of your amplifier from Clean to Dirty, all it takes is the right cable for the job whether it's a MIDI cable, or a 1/4" plug. There are loops that you can put your favorite distortion boxes into and play with your analog effects also.
For the price, you're getting WAY more than you could by piecing together all sorts of MIDI and rack gear to do the same thing.
This is a superb product and I recommend it for ANY pro or semi-pro guitarist.

It almost feels like it plays itself. This guitar has incredible sustain,
the pickups are great all the way from crunch to warm and mellow.
This is a great deal for such an incredible guitar.
The inlay work looks great and the neck through body really gives
this guitar the tone and sound that DEAN fans have come to love.
The maple body is as light as a feather and feels great and
is properly balanced. This is another shred MACHINE from the DEAN
masters.
For some reason the inferno has not been as popular
as some of their other guitars and i cant see why. This plays as well
as the dime from hell and the Dixie Rebel.
There is NOT a double locking Floyd Rose trem on this axe, there is a tom style bridge and the ever faithful Grover tuners which do a great job
at keeping in tune.
I would recommend this to your ammo collection of great guitars.
If you are a collector of flying v guitars do NOT pass this one up!

(More customer reviews)I used to haul a heavy 2x10 tube combo to gigs- until I got this baby. More power than I'll ever need for small halls, channel switching, and a tremendous range of tones. You can, literally, create just about any amp tone, from a smooth JC-120/Polytone jazz sound to a Fender tweed to a Marshall stack or a hot AC30.
And it's done with analog circuitry, not digital; the result is a very realistic sound that doesn't have any of that "computer generated" sound you often get from Line6 amps and other modeling amps. If you've ever used a Sansamp pedal, that's the range you get.
The controls are different from the other Tech21 amps, which are set up like one or more GT2 pedals. This amp gives you two channels with very different qualities. One can be thought of as a classic Fender sound that can be tweaked anywhere from a mellow Vibraverb sound up through a tweaked Mesa Boogie. The other channel is the Brit channel, and yields a range of classic Vox and Marshall sounds, as well as a number that haven't been invented yet.
I liked this amp so much that I now own three different Tech21 amps. My only tube amp is a Fender champ, and I just keep that for sentimental reasons.

(More customer reviews)I am by no means an expert guitar player. I used to play when I was younger and just recently decided to start playing again. I love Country Music, some Jazz, some Blues and some Rock. More Country Music than any of the others.
I previously purchased an Oscar Schmidt Blue Burst for myself and was so impressed I decided to buy a Tobacco Sunburst. When I received the Tobacco Sunburst, I noticed it was one made in Indonesia. I looked it over and it looked and felt like a real quality guitar. In some ways, it felt better than the Blue Burst I have that is made in China. After tuning it, I played a few chords with an amplifier and a few chords without. The sound it produced was REMARKABLE!!! This is NOT a cheap guitar! With or without an amplifier, this guitar has a sound that can give the best Gibson, Epiphone or Gretsch REAL competition!!!
The OE30 has two Washburn Series 400 Pickups that can produce a warm deep mellow sound or a sharp rock growl. The body is made of maple with a flawless finish. The neck is mahogany and has a good feel. The Grover Tuners are quality and have a good postive feel when tuning. The Tobacco Sunburst came with different strings than my Blue Burst. The strings are thicker and more like the strings on an acoustic. Playing it takes a tad more pressure, but the sound they produce is beyond belief!
For the price, you get an awesome guitar that rivals the more expensive semi-hollows. Don't let the fact it's made in Indonesia dissuade you from purchasing one. I will admit, there are flaws, but you have to look really, REALLY close to find any. This is a quality guitar that if properly cared for, could last a lifetime and will. Washburn also warranties the guitar to the original purchaser for life. (Read the Warranty for limitations).
If you want a semi-hollow guitar, consider the OE30. You will not be sorry. You will receive a quality guitar, a lifetime warranty and save money as well.

Tech 21 TM-60/112 2-Channel, 1x12, 60 watt Combo Guitar Amp with Celestion Speaker Review

(More customer reviews)Nicest amp I've owned. I won't have to worry about tube maintenance or switching. It captures about every sound I was looking for. Volume is good for practice in my home or for gigging. It's built like a tank- I know because when it was delivered-they dropped it (literally) at my front door. It's unlike any solid state I've used before- the simulation and sound are more tube realistic and then there is the fact that it is touch responsive like a tube. Using the vol on my guitar to control the attack and such is something I do now becuase it's as if ( the amp circuit is reaching through the cord and seeking to grab at the strings ), for lack of a better description. The settings are very unique by name but work in different ways than most players are used to. Come on- weep, bite, punch and growl are redefinitions of middle, bright, distortion and overdrive and they work in tandem and off the drive setting. There is only a single master treble and bass and they affect the settings I just described. It's a fun learning curve. It makes my strat do anything Hendrix or SRV for sound and then I can pull off jazz and fat Gibson sounds on the same guitar. My 335 can pull off strat sounds as well as the 335 blues sound I use mostly. You can tighten it up so it is trebly and like a slap in the face or you can fatten it up and add some mud and just do Ted Nugent -Black Sabbath mayhem. With the channel switching it is a double order workhorse. It's got a headphone jack (my wife digs that), a line out if you want to run it direct to PA, and it's expandable to any amount of power and volume you could want. I am still experimenting. You should check out some you-tube for this because a couple guys go thru it and do a show and tell. I have had 2 twins, a blues deluxe, a couple peaveys (ss), an Ibanez (ss), an old bassman, This is the one, especially since it was only 5 bones! I dumped most all my pedals now and just use this amp-a 335 and a strat with SD p/ups. I can get any sound under the sun and carry it all with ease. If it was lost or stolen, I would replace it exactly. I almost forgot- the Reverb is supreme!!! If you have a tube amp- check Tech 21's Sansamp pedals (tri-ac) Awesome!

Traveler Guitar Speedster Electric Travel Guitar (Candy Apple Red Metallic, Gig Bag) Review

(More customer reviews)When it first arrived, I was impressed at its small build, but at the same time I was worried that it wouldn't quite cut it for me (looks like a toy at times). After playing for a couple of hours, I fell in love with my Traveler.
Pros:
1) Good for traveling, obviously, due to its VERY small frame.
2) It may not look pleasing to the eye with an armrest attached. But you could play standing up without the armrest. It's light. It's not suffocating (like some guitars are when played standing up). And it trains you to get used to playing standing up.
3) When the guitar arrived I jumped straight into playing it from the box. It worked great, and I was surprised at how comfortable the guitar felt. Almost like my first love (: It sounds great, has great tone and clarity. Wood quality was good, and sliding was surprisingly easy.
Cons:
1) Pickup. It may not cut it for metalheads. But I paired it with my Roland Microcube and it's good to go for me.
2) The armrest creeks at times. It could feel like a full-build guitar really if the armrest attaches better.
3) Restringing. Enough said.
Some notes:
1) The tuning pegs have really limited space around them. It may be inconvenient to most guys, but I have small fingers, hence tuning was made easy for me (I just use my right hand all the way!)
2) I think this guitar really fits my size. Guitars are always made for males; hence us female guitarists always have to accommodate. It's light, so I don't have to feel like I'm carrying bricks on my shoulder when I play standing up. I don't know how to put my next point appropriately, so I'm just gonna say: for females, it fits.
3) If you're the type that rests your 3rd and/or 4th finger on the guitar while you pick, it may feel strange when you first play the Traveler as there is way less solid space to rest on (due to the tuning pegs' position). You WILL get used to it, though; your body will automatically adjust and make use of whatever space there is.
Why 4 stars, not 5? Because I really want to restring to XL strings, but I get tired when I think of assignments AND look at the back of the guitar (:
