A really great uke. The tone is a mix between bright and mellow. It has that "traditional" Hawaiian sound. It also has a solid feel and you can tell it's well constructed. As for looks, its beautiful. The wood grain on my in particular is very nice. I get compliments all the time on the sound and look.
If this is your first or next uke purchase, you will not be disappointed.

You'll absolutely love this concert ukulele! Why? Start with the tonewoods. Kala's KA-KC's top, back, and sides are made from genuine Hawaiian koa, which gives this uke a very distinctive tonality and a beautifully unique look. Elegant maple top and back binding add a perfect visual complement to the wood. You won't believe how great the KA-KC plays, thanks to its comfortable neck. It's also built to perform like a champ; the quality die-cast tuning machines keep you in tune. Pick up this ukulele and you won't want to put it down!

Kala Solid Acacia Tenor Ukulele Review

Kala Solid Acacia Tenor Ukulele
Average Reviews:

This is a nice sounding ukulele from Kala. Intonation is spot on all the way up the neck. Looks beautiful, too, especially the slotted head stock. My only complaint with Kala (and Lanikai) is the neck could be a little wider, at least for my hands. And though the sound is nice and bright, mine at least lacks the warmer, deeper sound of other ukes. Granted, my Kamakas have a much warmer, deeper sound, but they cost several hundred dollars more. Maybe it's just me, but I think the Kala solid mahogany series sound nicer. I may try to change the strings on my Kala Acacia uke. Many seem to do that with this model. This is still a nice ukulele though. I don't regret getting it. I would recommend trying one out in a music store first, if you have one nearby.

Lanikai S-TEQ Spruce Series Tenor Acoustic Electric Ukulele Review

Lanikai S-TEQ Spruce Series Tenor Acoustic Electric Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a review for the Lanikai S-TEQ Spruce Series Tenor Acoustic Electric Ukulele
Basic features:
-Hohner (Made in China).
-18 frets on rosewood fretboard.
-Solid spruce top with mahogany back and sides.
-Active pickup.
-Tenor cutaway.
-Geared tuners.
When I received the package, I was pleasantly surprised how well the unit was packed: A box within a box, and lots of paper cushion/support. Inside the second box, more cardboard and plastic-balloon padding.
It looks are pleasing to the eye. I was a bit hesitant to get a production instrument from China, but fortunately this particular instrument did not disappoint me. The finish is nice and clean, there were no obvious blemishes, and the build seems solid enough. Inside the soundhole, I can see a bit of carelessness (excess glue in one area of the bindings) but not visible and does not affect the sound. The cutaway feature is... okay... not really something I care about (this is my only uke that has a cutaway body), but it is there for those who do care and want/need it.
There was no buzzing at all, and the frets were nice and polished. It came with Aquilla Nylgut (hi-G) strings, so I didn't have to change them out. The action is lower than I anticipated, so I didn't have to adjust anything. I checked the intonation, and the 2nd-4th strings were pretty much spot on, but the 1st string was a good 20 cents flat on the 12th fret. Because the other strings were in tune on the 12th fret, I speculated that it might have been an issue of the string itself. I changed out the first string, and lo-and-behold... tuned right on A.
The sound is very punchy and bright, due mainly to the strings and the solid spruce top. I tried both the standard (hi-G) and the low-G tuning, and for this instrument I like the hi-G tuning better. I use this as my beater/travel ukulele.
The electronics are decent, but for the price ($149) it is very good. My only gripe is the 9v battery, and tells me that this is an older unit (pre-2008) with the Belcat UK2000 preamp, because all the new Hohner ukes made 2008 and after comes with the Shadow JW2 preamp (and Nanoflex pickup) which uses the smaller 3v coin battery. Not too big of an issue, but it is still a difference.
Overall, for the price this is a decent acoustic/electric ukulele. I prefer my solid koas, but when I go out to a picnic or anywhere I do not feel comfortable bringing my solid wood ukes, I bring this baby along. Highly recommended.

I'm a forro fan and a guitar player, and I decided to take the plunge and buy the Giannini hand crafted model.
I've read mixed reviews about Giannini cavaquinhos on message boards, but this is one of the finest instruments I have ever played. I absolutely love it. The action and intonation are refined. It resonates beautifully. Solid rosewood sides and back. It FEELS and sounds like a great instrument, and the finishing is beautiful.
I have the less expensive Giannini GCSM 4 CTE cavaquinho. It's a decent little beater, but this is a vastly superior instrument.
The pickup sounds great and the built in tuner is a lovely bonus. Amplified or acoustic, it's fabulous.
I can honestly say is a pleasure to play. I'm enthusiastic to play it.

Kala Curly Mango Tenor Ukulele Review

I bought my Kala Mango Uke about 2 years ago, and i'ts still my favorite of all the instruments that i own.
Every aspect of the uke is asthetically pleasing, from the beautiful color of the wood, to the gold plated gear tuners and pink pearloid tuning knobs.
What is most striking about it, of course is the sound. It has an extremely bright, forward sound which includes beautiful ringing high notes and deep bass notes.
I've only hooked it up to an amp a couple of times, and it works well, but it is such a loud uke, that i perfer to play without.
Great Buy!

Kala Solid Acacia Soprano Ukulele Review

Kala Solid Acacia Soprano Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It was with great anticipation that I awaited this little soprano's arrival as I needed a gift for my wife for our 38th wedding anniversary.
With all of the great reviews on Kala Ukuleles, I had to try their soprano.
As far as the looks go, although not the Koa looking one in the picture, the one that arrived was still nice.
This is a simply made instrument and that's to be expected as it is not on the same build or cost level as a Kamaka, Ko'olau or Pono.
But that in no way takes anything away from this ukulele!
The fingerboard is nicely done especially the nickel silver fretwork. There are no fret ends sticking up and they are nicely rounded at their ends.
After tightening the screws on the end of the friction tuners the soprano stayed in tune perfectly. Do not over tighten these screws! Tighten only in small increments.
The intonation was great. The neck is very comfortable with no surprises. Bar chords are easily played with a nice rolled edge on the fingerboard.
The real gem, in this instrument, is the sound quality! It has excellent projection with the traditional "Bark" when bouncing around on the strings playing chords.
Fingerpicking produces very clear and melodic notes! Fretting is also effortless.
This little instrument was singing to me when I was taking the wrapper off, so I knew it was going to sound great!
I love playing it and my wife loves her gift!

When the British ship The Ravenscrag first landed in Hawaii they brought with them an instrument never before seen on the islands. The machête was an all mahogany instrument that captured the attention of the locals who wanted one of their own. With no native mahogany on the islands the Portuguese ship carpenters began building what is now known as the ukulele out of koa. Lanikai continues in that tradition by creating the Natural Koa Series. Featuring a Solid Figured Koa top and Figured Koa back/sides the NK series has the exceptionally crisp tone that koa is prized for. The abalone inlays on the body and sound hole coupled with flame maple binding make this ukulele a work of art. Lanikai breaks tradition is by installing Grover tuners geared 18/1 for exceptional tuning control. This is a welcome change for anyone who has dealt with the frustration of using the standard friction tuners. This instrument is one of of Kala's top of the line concert ukuleles. I've had a few other Kala's and they're all pretty good. The intonation is no better than their lesser models, which is fair. It's real pretty though. I bought it used, knowing it was a very new model, so it couldn't be an old instrument. A couple of weeks later, the book-end glue joint on the top opened up about 1/16th of an inch. Doesn't effect the sound or playing, but looks very bad. Can't return it, don't want to pay to fix it. Next time, I'd stick with a cheaper Kala Model.

This ukulele was a big disappointment, all the more so because Amazon shipped it promptly and it was out of the box 5 days after I bought it.
The intonation was worse that a $30 Mahalo. It wasn't much louder than a solid spruce top, and the overall appearance was, well, cheap. I guess the lesson learned is that a resonator uke for $300 will be "cheap".

I have played many ukuleles and to me this by far sounds the best. The natural Koa seems to resonate more than the standard Koa or curly Koa ukuleles. I did switch out my strings as soon as I got it for some black strings with the low string being a metal wound string but that's a personal preference. The workmanship is beautiful. I was skeptical originally because I am the type to try before I buy. I had the S-TEQ before this and didn't like the "bright" sound compared to the softer Koa sound. I will try to post a video review so you can hear it.

Lanikai CK-S Soprano Curly Koa Ukulele Review

Lanikai CK-S Soprano Curly Koa Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had to return the first one because the tuners were installed crookedly. It didn't affect the playability but it just didn't look good. Amazon exchanged no problem as usual. The second one was completely different. The first was made in China and the second was made in Indonesia. The wood grain on the new one is AMAZING. Very contrasted light to dark grains, just like you would expect in a curly koa. The first one looked just like the picture. All the same color. One tuner on the new one was very slightly crooked but not enough to return it for a second time. Not to mention I like this grain a lot better so it's a keeper.
I played guitar for years but never played the uke. I've played this a few times and it sounds fine to me, but I'm no expert. It seems to stay in tune. They are not friction tuners. They are standard mechanical tuners. Tuner quality looks OK.
The craftsmanship, aside from the slightly crooked tuners, is very good. There are no over-sanding spots or glue drips. The pearl inlays look beautiful. This uke does not look like a toy like some other ukes.
The weakness here seems to be consistency. It's apparent that they use multiple facilities and what you get depends upon where it was made. Cross your fingers I guess and hope you get an Indonesian one with the full grain curley koa wood.

The Curly Koa Series is the pride of Lanikai. The CK-S uses Hawaiian Koa that is especially prized for its curly grain. Lanikai makes use of this exquisite wood by handcrafting the CK series to exacting specifications. Grown mostly on the island of Oahu, the gorgeous red-hued wood used for the Curly Koa series make these ukuleles look as beautiful as they sound. In its most traditional form the CK-S is a Soprano ukulele that owes its existence to Portuguese immigrants bringing their craft of music instrument building to Hawaii in the 1870's. The Ck series comes with die cast tuning machines geared 14/1 for those players that demand greater control over their tuning. If you have never played ukulele before get ready for a world of fun.
